By , About.com Guide

Imagine two companies. Both provide a high level of customer service, quality products, and similar pricing. However, only one company takes the time to build your trust with a clear privacy statement on their website and during consultations. Extra care is used in dealing with your personal information. Which company would you choose to do business with?

In the last 10 years consumers have become very concerned about privacy. Research shows over 70% of consumers are concerned about the use of their personal information. Is your small business privacy friendly?

According to privacy expert, Dr. Alan Westin, consumers fall into three categories for privacy concerns:

1. Privacy Fundamentalists: Over 25 % of consumers who want more privacy laws and opt-in choices.

2. Privacy Unconcerned: Up to 12% of consumers who are willing to exchange privacy for buying benefits.

3. Privacy Pragmatists: The majority of consumers, up to 63% who want clear privacy rules and disclosure from companies.

Small business has much to gain by adopting a privacy policy. Privacy policies present an opportunity for building customer trust, enhancing company credibility and winning more business. Is your small business privacy-friendly?

A privacy-friendly company has a clear privacy policy which includes:

  • A statement of how personal information is used and shared within or outside the company.

  • Steps taken to ensure consumer information is kept secure and private.

  • Providing customers with choices in the use of their information.

  • A way to contact your company and openness to discuss privacy.

  • Full disclosure to consumers pertaining to when and why their personal information is collected.

  • Small businesses operating online require special care in crafting an online privacy policy. Two great websites that will generate an online privacy policy for your business are: OECD Privacy Policy Statement Generator and The Direct Marketing Association Privacy Policy Generator (See the above Link Box).

Privacy laws and guidelines will vary by industry and country. Check with your industry association as well as federal and local governments for privacy laws and guidelines.

Take the time to educate your staff about the use and guideline of your privacy policy. In the end, your clients will feel more confident in dealing with your business. Privacy is the right of all.
