I'm not a big fan of "rules" that tell you what you should do, or not do, in order to be successful. But I do believe there are better (and smarter) ways to do things, especially when it comes to your small business.
For example, you can use social media in hundreds of ways, and one of those ways is not necessarily the right way for everyone. BUT, there are some commonsense things that can definitely hurt your business, regardless of how you are using various networks. Things like lying, spamming and being confrontational, to name a few.
