Business Rules Are Made to Be Broken

By , About.com Guide   August 30, 2010

Follow me on:

obeyThere are some very useful rules for naming a business, and I believe in all of them. But, if you looked at the name of my own business, you might notice something a little off.

Yes, that's right. I broke number 8 of the cardinal rules for naming a business. I used a made-up word that is frequently misspelled and mispronounced. I did it deliberately, although I'll admit that I didn't foresee all of the benefits that came along with using a business name that was so unique:

  • It's memorable (even if it's often mispronounced).
  • Many people are curious enough about the origin to ask how I came up with it.
  • It's not easily confused with other businesses.
  • It sets me apart from my competition.

Of course using a made-up word won't work for every business, and I may have had just as much success with a more traditional name. But this goes to show that rules, advice and tips for naming a business -- and really most aspects of starting a business -- should be taken with a grain of salt. It's okay to take a different path from the masses; you may still end up at the same (or better) destination.

Are there any business rules you've deliberately ignored for a positive outcome?

Oh, by the way, the name of my business is avertua (ah-ver-choo-ah). Say that 10 times fast!
