"According to most studies, people's number one fear is public speaking. Number two is death. Death is number two. Does that sound right? This means to the average person, if you go to a funeral, you're better off in the casket than doing the eulogy." ---Jerry Seinfeld

Jerry isn't too far off of reality. The words "public speaking" strikes fear in the minds of otherwise competent and confident small business owners. There are many ways to increase business exposure so why bother to overcome your speaking jitters? Stepping up to the podium not only positions you as an expert in your area of business but provides effortless referrals and improved sales opportunities.

Does the thought of speaking in front of a group evokes fear, make you sweat, starts your heart pounding? It's likely you have glossophobia. The fear of speaking in public. It's possible to master the art of public speaking by taking small steps. It may take an audience of one or the rapt attention of Fido but practicing until you don't have to think about your words can help lay the foundation for more speaking confidence.

You could add body language to that list. Seasoned speakers use gestures all the time, but it’s also good for beginners. Speakers using body language appear more confident and it helps release any nervous energy (perfect for beginners). New public speakers that do get nervous can also try using a lecturn which gives you somewhere to rest your hands and notes if you need them.

Practice is good – indeed anything that build skills is great – but our experience (and we’ve helped thousands of people with this fear) is that serious glossophobia (stage fright, fear of public speaking) has nothing to do with skills or experience.

We’ve worked with countless people who are excellent and experienced speakers who develop the fear – and frankly plenty of folks who do not yet speak all that well, but now do so confidently.

Rather the fear is an ‘automatic’ response of the nervous system – triggering anxiety by mistake when it isn’t appropriate.

Luckily it is easy – and quick – to overcome provided you approach the problem the right way.

We’re happy to advise anyone who needs help with Fear of Public Speaking
