Rising Do Not Call Costs

Tuesday May 2, 2006
It's been almost 3 years since the FTC established the National Do Not Call Registry. Over 120 million consumers have entered their phone number in the registry. Small business using telemarketing have had to adapt to the new conditions. Now the FTC is proposing a fee hike to cover the costs of operating the registry. The new fees would increase from $56 to $62 for each area code of data accessed and the maximum annual amount charged to access 280 area codes or more would increase from $15,400 to $17,050. Jerry Cerasale Direct Marketing Association's, Senior Vice President stated in a recent press release, “In less than three years since the Registry came into existence, the costs for marketers to access the lists have risen by 148 percent – far beyond the rate of inflation.” You can share your thoughts on the proposed changes to the FTC comment form. However, don't expect any fee reductions. A better strategy is to diversify your marketing to "Beat the Do Not Call List Blues."

I think it is stupid that we would have to pay to access a list of people that don’t want called. And then if you don’t pay for it, you get fined if you would call someone on the list. I think the list should be taken over by other organization that will manage it for free. Managing 120 million numbers shouldn’t be a big expense for any of these larger companies that have the right software to manage a list like this online.
